Woodrow Wilsons Limousine
When Woodrow Wilson returned from France after negotiating the Treaty of Versailles in 1919, a new Pierce-Arrow limousine awaited him at the dock in New York to take him back to Washington. The limousine had just been added to the White House fleet. Wilson favoured this automobile so much that when he left office his friends purchased it for him to use. So, it seemed quite a fitting tribute that his 1919 Pierce-Arrow limousine would feature in the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Dedication Ceremony, near Washington, D.C.
Dignitaries arrived at the ceremony in the Pierce-Arrow. In addition, the Pierce-Arrow’s horn was used to begin the ceremony itself, which was a dedication of the completion of the new Woodrow Wilson Bridge – which connects Virginia and Maryland on Interstate 95 across the Potomac River. The Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library was honoured that the Pierce-Arrow limousine was featured in this significant ceremony; the original bridge was named to honour President Wilson, and they are pleased that he will continue to be remembered on the new bridge.
The Pierce-Arrow limousine brings back memories of an era long gone. From July, 1919, until the inauguration of his successor in 1921, President Wilson rode frequently in the handsome limousine on official business. The automobile was distinguished by two special emblems. On each of its arched rear passenger doors, the Presidential Seal was displayed. On the front of the radiator panel was the AAA symbol, for in 1917 he was the first President of the United States to join the association!
Limousines tend to be associated with moments in history and the people using them. From JFK’s assassination in the back of his limo in Dallas to Adolph Hitler defiantly saluting while riding in his custom made bullet-proof Mercedes-Benz. Events and the passage of time have resulted in the cars outliving their passengers. These days you don’t have to be a president or a dictator to be able to enjoy the luxury of riding in a limousine.
